SEMA VOLUNTARY LABELING SYSTEM

SEMA (Specialty Equipment Market Association) has long been an association for companies manufacturing aftermarket parts and accessories for automobiles. SEMA has proven especially helpful to its members navigating the sometimes confusing and cumbersome pathways to producing EPA and ARB compliant products. SEMA has also accepted membership from companies manufacturing motorcycle parts and accessories and has proven to be a helpful partner.

In the 2023 SEMA Emissions Compliance Handbook, SEMA introduced its updated voluntary labeling program that is beginning to be used throughout the automotive and now in the motorcycle business. It is a simple 1, 2, 3, 4 label system that makes clear the status of a product to be sold and where it may be sold based upon the manufacturer’s statement of which number is to be applied to the product.

Here on the Cobra website we have labelled our emissions products with these numbered labels to ensure dealers and end consumers understand clearly the status of a specific product.

• Products with the number 1 label are available for sale in all 50 states and have an ARB E.O. number.

• Products with the number 2 label are available for sale in 49 states. But not in California. These products are EPA Emissions compliant but do not have an ARB EO number.

• Products with the number 3 label are available for race applications only or on older pre-emissions vehicles.

• Products with the Number 4 label are available for sale in all 50 states. These are gnerally cat-back, slip-on mufflers.

Cobra sells its products to distributors only. It does not sell directly to dealers or consumers. So should a dealer have further questions, they should contact their distributor for additional information. Consumers should contact their local dealers.

    Emissions Notice

The state of California considers aftermarket exhaust systems to be legal replacement parts for non-catalyst equipped motorcycles and/or if slip-on mufflers are installed downstream of the OEM catalysts.

California does not allow the use of aftermarket systems that remove original equipment catalysts, (except for racing use only) unless the Air Resources Board has issued an Executive Order for that system.

For California riders we offer Air Resources Board approved Fi2000 R ARB units. (ARB E.O. No. D-633-1). All other Fi2000 models are not legal for street use in California.
